Her Broom ~ A 100-word essay

By EclecticFusion

I love writing 100-word essays. I try to pick a topic every day and expand on it. In this one, I remember the day and how I felt. It was sad, but it was entirely my fault. I left the broom out and I did not blame the dog!

It’s just a broom. An old broom made long ago by the blind. No, it’s not just an old broom, it belonged to my mother. She died in 2001 and always used this broom. She would sweep the carpet when she didn’t feel like dragging out the vacuum. She would sweep the front walk so that we wouldn’t track dirt into the house. Yes, it’s just her old broom made by some blind people. Her broom that I hardly ever used. Now, it’s been mauled by the dog. Sentimental fool with her sentimental half-eaten broom.

It may have been just a broom but it belonged to your mom and that makes it more than just a broom. I have my grandmother's hat she wore to work in the garden. To some it is just a straw hat. Voted up and awesome.

mljdgulley354: Thank you! I try not to get attached to objects, but sometimes that's hard to do. I still have a doll from 1966 that was my favorite when I was an infant!

Not a sentimental fool, just a sentimental soul. I remember those brooms well. Hard to put the good memories of the past aside. Your 100 word essay really hits the mark. Voted up.

I like the idea of 100 word essays and this one really touched my heart. You are a very creative and sentimental soul - don't ever apologize for it.

Have you ever converted a 100 word essay into a short story? I would think that could work well too :). Enjoyed this hub! Thanks for sharing

Christin, I've never expanded on any of my essays, but it would be a good idea! I do tend to freak out after writing so many words, such as a short story. I start rambling and then I start to doubt myself. Next thing you know, I stop and start on something new. Negativity! It's not a good thing!
